The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia's national climate, weather and water agency. We facilitate informed risk management and decision making by providing timely, trusted and reliable information for the public, policy makers, state and federal agencies, and sectors including emergency services, agriculture, mining, and energy. Our digital water services include nationally-consistent data for over 900,000 groundwater bores across the country; information on use, extraction and storage of water in major urban centres—covering over 70% of the Australian population; near real-time water information for the Murray Darling Basin, which accounts for approximately 60% of national water use; a nationwide geographic information system detailing spatial relationships between hydrological features and monitoring points; and, flood forecasting services that provide life-saving warnings and alerts for approximately 500 locations across the country, issued in partnership with emergency services and the media.
